Most Popular Tempura Places in Okinawa!

Naha

When you are in the beautiful island Okinawa, tempura is one of the dishes you should try. Tempura is a traditional Japanese dish where ingredients are coated with special batter and then deep fried. It is popular all over the country, but Okinawa's tempura is often slightly different from the normal tempura as Okinawa is located in the southernmost island.

Feel free to follow favy!

1. Sakurai (桜囲)

A small tempura shop located 5 minutes from Makishi station is known for its great and freshly fried tempura.

When you get in the shop, you need to buy a ticket for your meal from the vending machine. They have several options for the tempura set menu such as shrimp tempura meal and mixed tempura meal (750-1000 yen). They come with side dishes, rice and soup, which is totally satisfying amount.

2. Tempura Dining Orenchi (天麩羅 ダイニング 俺ん家)

Just a minute walk from Makishi station, this tempura restaurant is very exciting to visit.

With lively atmosphere, they offer all-you-can-eat tempura! More surprisingly, it is just 2000 yen for 2 hours and you can enjoy all-you-can-drink alcohol including beer, whisky, and wine as well! It is good place not only for tempura lovers but also for those who have never tried tempura.

3. Umi Shirono (海味しろの)

This shop is at "Kokusai dori" (international street), one of the most popular sightseeing spot with a lot of shops. It is around 3 minutes walk from Makishi station.

It's not a restaurant but like a food stall. Great atmosphere and the chefs cook your tempura as the open kitchen. You can order tempura one by one and each is just 100-200 yen. You should get tempura using Okinawa's local ingredients like bitter gourd.

4. Nakamoto Tempura Ten (中本てんぷら店)

Okinawa actually has a unique tempura culture that they eat them as a snack. This place is the most popular Okinawan "snack-style" tempura shop you need to try!

Okinawan tempura is different in terms of the batter. Usually tempura has a very thin and light batter, but Okinawan tempura batter is thick and fluffy. And you will bite your tempura instead of using chopsticks. I recommend you to get "mozuku", which is a kind of seaweed from Okinawa, and it is just 65 yen!

5. Mitsumaru (みつまる)

A popular soba restaurant located 3 minutes walk from Kencho-mae station serves homemade delicious soba/udon noodles and tempura.

They offer a variety of noodle menu with local food, ranging 800-1500 yen. Tempura soba comes with vegetables, tofu, and crispy shrimp (or squid) tempura that is healthy and tasty.
