Searching for Japanese Spiritual Monsters at 'Kitaro Chaya'

When it comes to classic yokai(spiritual monsters) manga, I think of GeGeGe no Kitaro. The manga's author, Shigeru Mizuki, spent most of his adult life living in Chofu, in the suburbs of Tokyo. There, near the large 'Jindaiji Temple,' is a Kitaro-themed tea house that sells awesome cafe food, drinks, and merchandise based on the manga. Check it out this summer!

Feel free to follow favy!

1.About the Manga 'GeGeGe no Kitaro'

The famous manga 'GeGeGe no Kitaro' is a story by Japanese author Shigeru Mizuki that was first published in 1960 as 'Hakaba(graveyard) Kitaro' and was later changed to its current name in 1967. The story is about a yokai(spiritual monster) boy named Kitaro, the last surviving member of the ghost tribe who was born in a graveyard after his parents' death. The story revolves around Kitaros work to promote peace between humans and yokai, which often involves battling with the yokai to protect the humans. The manga has been popular ever since its first publication and has been turned into several animes. Kitaro remains popular to this day, and will likely stay that way for a long time!

'Kitaro Chaya' is a very special cafe that serves coffee, ice cream, and a variety of other treats. Today, we ordered the GeGeGe latte and Ice Cream Sundae (Ittanmomen Chaya Sundae). Both were delicious and interesting. The menu is also worth noting, as it looks like pages from the manga, which is very cool!

Ice cream ( Ittanmomen Chaya Sundae ) ¥800

This ice cream has a rich milk flavor and it is very creamy! The toppings include a ghostly Ittanmomen-shaped gelatin, peaches, red bean paste, a cherry, cereal flakes, a cookie, and kuromitsu sauce.

This ice cream is perfect for eating in the summer since it is not too sweet. However, if you're the type who prefers more sweetness, you can add more of the kuromitsu (brown sugar syrup). The red bean paste mixed with the ice cream is quite delicious, even if you don’t add any kuromitsu.

Even if you're unfamiliar with Kitaro, this ice cream is a lot more fun than your average sundae, and it tastes great!

Premium milk is used in this latte, giving it a divinely creamy texture.
When you order, you can choose your favorite character to be added as a design on the top. This latte is creamy, delicious, fun, and highly recommended!

4.Yokai Are Waiting at Kitaro Chaya

Japanese Yokai are super interesting, with figures resembling cats, mice, walls, clothing, etc.
The yokai in the GeGeGe no Kitaro series don’t make people feel fear, but instead, make people feel happy! Kitaro Chaya is a special place that is definitely worth making a trip to. Check it out for yourself!
