Halloween In Shibuya

Shibuya has become the ground zero of the Halloween phenomenon in Japan. Monstrous crowds of costume-wearing young people transform the area into what is essentially an open-air party.

Halloween in Shibuya is a very interesting event not only because of the costumes, but because it's one of the rare occasions you have in Tokyo to walk up to total strangers on the street and start up a conversation.

A good way to approach people is to ask to take a picture with them, especially if you're wearing a costume yourself. Japanese people tend to be particularly happy to do so if you're wearing a costume with a similar theme to theirs.
The surprisingly huge social phenomenon known as Halloween in Japan is actually extremely recent. The first massive gathering in Shibuya only started in 2014.

A few years earlier, some people had started going to Shibuya to show off their costume at the famous crossing known as the Shibuya Scramble, but they were largely seen as a curiosity. This is what Halloween was like back in 2011.

Fast forward to a few years after that and this is what Shibuya looks like. The Shibuya Scramble is packed with people, so much so that you can barely move once you get into the crowd. The mass, of course, overflows to the surrounding street and virtually all of Shibuya becomes one big Halloween matsuri.

Halloween In Shibuya 2019, A 6-Day Happening From Oct 26 - 31

If the past is any indication of the future, we know that the Halloween spirit takes over Shibuya from the Saturday prior to Halloween, so this year, Halloween season in Shibuya should be from October 26th to 31st, with the largest crowd gathering - obviously - on the day of Halloween, which falls on a Thursday.

When To Get There

The peak hours are between 6 PM and 11 PM. A good time to get there is at around 5 PM.

On the Saturday night prior to Halloween, expect many people to stay until the wee hours of the night.

Getting A Costume

For a decent costume of about ¥5,000 or less, the place of choice in Japan is Don Quijote. You can get full costumes, makeup, scar patches, and many other accessories too.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, try Daiso, which is a ¥100 shop that sells interesting Halloween accessories too.
