Where to Have Old-fashioned Curry in Yokosuka, Kanagawa!

Yokosuka is famous for its American naval base and a particular cuisine that developed around it. One of the most famous foods of Yokosuka is the curry. It seems to be very popular with the navy personnel as well as the Japanese locals. So if you go there, you'll have plenty of restaurants to choose from. Bengal

Bengal has been around since 1971. It's the most popular restaurant in the city for curry. It's located just a 2-minute walk from the Yokosuka Station's East Exit. Only counter seats are available. As for what to order, if it's your first time you should probably try the very popular German egg curry shown in the picture below. People say it has a deep curry taste and a generous amount of sausages. You can also have a seafood curry and other kinds of meat and cheese curries. Prices are all under 1,000 yen for a curry plate.

Yokosuka Kaigun Curry Main Store

At Yokosuka Kaigun Curry, located a 3-minute walk from the Yokosuka Chuo Station, you can have the traditional Japanese curry as a set meal served with a salad and a glass of milk for 1,300 yen. This place is also very popular and has been operating for over 40 years. The original recipe for their curry comes from England and they use fruits and vegetables to make their flavorful curry. Their beef and special chicken curries are the most ordered items. You can also have a tonkatsu (pork cutlets) on which you add the curry yourself that comes with it in a gravy pourer.

Cafe Terace WOOD ISLAND

WOOD ISALAND is located a 5-minute walk from the Yokosuka Chuo Station. Their curry sets come with milk and a salad. This is a sort of tradition in Yokosuka. The restaurant operates in a charming blue and white building and the interior decoration with flowery tablecloths gives the impression you're in an American diner of the 1970s. Curry sets such as the one shown below are around 1,300 yen. The salads are bigger than at most other curry restaurants.

TSUNAMI

TSUNAMI is a 10-minute walk to the east of the Yokosuka Station. Mostly famous for their massive Navy Burgers, it also has some of the city's most famous curry. Their curry is made of beef, carrots, onions, and potatoes. For 1,200 you get a set with a glass of milk and a small salad, and for an extra 200 yen you can get a larger size.
